Objective: To create a visually cohesive and innovative poster series using image and type hierarchy that effectively promotes three musical poets for a spoken poetry event.
Understanding each artist
Through research, I discovered how each artist expresses their personal journey through distinct soundscapes—like Patti Smith's raw punk-rock tunes, JJJJJerome Ellis's reflective saxophone and spoken word, and Charmaine Lee's experimental vocal improvisations—and I sought to capture these unique messages within my poster series.

Experimental Free play
By experimenting with printed strips of type, I constructed multiple compositions and used photographs of the type as the blueprint for my poster compositions, focused on illustrating the flow of musical stanzas by curving, bending, and weaving sheets of paper.
Sketching
Inspired by my experiments, I sketched multiple ideations combining typography with imagery, ultimately crafting a variety of effective poster compositions.
Color, Typography, and Texture
To effectively showcase the artists' work and convey the narrative of their distinct soundscapes, I crafted a dynamic color palette, selected a geometric sans-serif typeface, and integrated real-world textures into my designs.
Iterations
With a focus on representing the raw energy each artist conveys within their work, I began iterating to create an effective and cohesive poster series.
Initial Iterations
In drafting potential ideas for my design, I envisioned a vivid, neon series incorporating the bending look I created in my type play. I eventually favored a more raw but exaggerated look for my composition rather than the heavily digitized versions created here.
Revised Iterations
In my second attempt, I created two cohesive series that represented each artist's journey. I chose to develop the first option further because it captured their identities more subtly, but I am pleased with how both series turned out.

Final Poster Series
In the final poster series, there are many elements of each poet implemented within each composition through color, metaphor, and digital manipulation.
